Innenstadt Officegerman version

Near Vienna City Hall, in the First District, a small office is being renovated after 20 years. Over the years, not only files, folders, furniture and objects have accumulated, but also technical equipment and working practices that have long since become outdated.

&#60;img width="1920" height="1514" width_o="1920" height_o="1514" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ffda67f68ab99fb33566bd0d38a0021fa53fe5166f8139c7e959b6235d25f1df/IOC_008.jpg" data-mid="251205104" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ffda67f68ab99fb33566bd0d38a0021fa53fe5166f8139c7e959b6235d25f1df/IOC_008.jpg" /&#62;

The first step in the renovation was therefore not design, but clearing out. Through an extended process, decisions were made together with the client as to what should remain, what should be archived, passed on or disposed of. This work could not be delegated – clearing out was already part of the project.

	&#60;img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/18c8dbd095663ab94cb03bae50af123690bdc06df6975a11eb06ec8e213eedd9/IMG_6437.JPG" data-mid="251283991" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/18c8dbd095663ab94cb03bae50af123690bdc06df6975a11eb06ec8e213eedd9/IMG_6437.JPG" /&#62;

The brief was to renew the existing space without fundamentally changing its familiar arrangement.

 The curtains, carpets and ceiling ornaments were to be retained. Given the uncertain future of the business at its current location, the budget was limited and the project had to be tightly and economically calculated. Materials, surfaces, and above all craftsmanship became all the more important. Magnificent, yet modest became the guiding principle for the spatial intervention.

	&#60;img width="1920" height="1514" width_o="1920" height_o="1514" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0688c30782614991f233493aef2b1ead6f5fe745707fab5c403ea724bf9564fc/IOC_001.jpg" data-mid="251205096" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0688c30782614991f233493aef2b1ead6f5fe745707fab5c403ea724bf9564fc/IOC_001.jpg" /&#62;
	&#60;img width="1920" height="1514" width_o="1920" height_o="1514" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bdfaa47584e22268d29fc444c1858fa7929a13fbb50eb9b3e6476f49cbd64bc9/IOC_002.jpg" data-mid="251205098" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bdfaa47584e22268d29fc444c1858fa7929a13fbb50eb9b3e6476f49cbd64bc9/IOC_002.jpg" /&#62;

The new furniture provides the necessary work surfaces for everyday office use as well as storage for documents. At the same time, it establishes a new horizontal plane running through the office at two different heights. The idea of pedestals rather than simple sideboards and tables goes beyond their original function: existing as well as future objects are deliberately given their place here, and with it, a meaning.

Collecting is not intended to stop in the years to come, but rather to become more ordered and visible.

Even the office printer receives its own pedestal and is positioned prominently in the room. Mirrors and new artworks on the walls reinforce this relationship between workspace and collection.

The sideboards are designed at a height that allows for an additional use: during larger meetings and office parties, the pedestals become a bar – a place to put down wine glasses, lean against and engage in informal conversation.

	&#60;img width="1920" height="1514" width_o="1920" height_o="1514" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/56cc42880c78d55c3350d04d69c6a550bc8ce70b80bf3b431b6aa00196a4a6af/IOC_005.jpg" data-mid="251205101" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/56cc42880c78d55c3350d04d69c6a550bc8ce70b80bf3b431b6aa00196a4a6af/IOC_005.jpg" /&#62;

Conceived as a modular system, the furniture reorganises the space without being permanently bound to it. The carcasses and fronts are made of coloured and milled MDF. The horizontal surfaces in solid oak and natural stone form a robust and high-quality plane. Tables and the archive shelving unit can be dismantled, allowing for new configurations at a possible future location.

		<description>Museum Macura

As the Danube meanders through the old town of Banovci, just 25km north of Belgrade lies the Magacin Macura - Zenit 4, an old barn transformed into a space for art. It complements the Museum Macura just a few kilometres downstream in Novi Banovci. Opened in 2008, the museum was built to house one of the largest private collections of modern and contemporary art in Eastern Europe and it is the first private museum in Serbia. The collection of Vladimir Macura includes some of the finest examples of early 20th century movements such as Zenithism, Dada, Surrealism, Viennese Actionism and more.

The
siting of the Magacin Macura is quite significant, being in an old village, away from the major
cities. Performing arts, concerts, theatre plays and film screenings
frequently turn the remote location into a place of gathering and
experience.

The
old barn was used for storing grain originally, then flour and more
recently bread. It consists of a beautifully simple wooden structure
with bolted joints, a visible roof truss, bare wooden floors and
brick walls. As much as possible of the material and special
qualities should be kept when it was decided to plan a significant expansion of the
building.&#38;nbsp;

	&#60;img width="2880" height="1920" width_o="2880" height_o="1920" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1a07c7f1261395a7d53eef76e869b8c41c54d7f123cff434f69b4cd82ae240dd/000_Miseum-Macura_DroneFoto.jpg" data-mid="85101861" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1a07c7f1261395a7d53eef76e869b8c41c54d7f123cff434f69b4cd82ae240dd/000_Miseum-Macura_DroneFoto.jpg" /&#62;
	&#60;img width="2880" height="1920" width_o="2880" height_o="1920" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/aa22b78c5202ff63bb095aba65802d15e69a17f1c88a8eff8db83b7882dcd497/003_Museum-Macura_Street-V.jpg" data-mid="85101900" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/aa22b78c5202ff63bb095aba65802d15e69a17f1c88a8eff8db83b7882dcd497/003_Museum-Macura_Street-V.jpg" /&#62;
With
a budget of only €30,000, equating to €65/m²—low even by
Serbian standards—the concept opted for simple low-cost techniques
using a steel frame to build the extension and insulated metal
cladding for the walls. The doors, windows,
and even the wooden flooring, were all reused materials, salvaged
from the local waste disposal site.

	&#60;img width="2880" height="1920" width_o="2880" height_o="1920" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ea97a54fd0eecaee5eb73d8d4befc5d924c995ef2eb382bba0fc1913c276eb93/004_Museum-Macura_Entrance.jpg" data-mid="85101901" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ea97a54fd0eecaee5eb73d8d4befc5d924c995ef2eb382bba0fc1913c276eb93/004_Museum-Macura_Entrance.jpg" /&#62;

For
the new Magacin, a large rectangular volume was placed along the
street, perpendicular to the existing building and lifted up to the
eaves line. The pink façade underlines this new presence in the
village. Two black boxes, housing a shop and storage spaces, are
forming the base of the volume. Between the boxes and the old
building, two covered doorways are created. Here, stained glass doors
are casting coloured light onto the existing brick walls of the barn,
where the flaking paintwork and loose render is in stark contrast to
the neatly plastered walls of the extension.

Passing
through the left doorway, the entrance lobby, there is a tree-lined
path, which winds its way down to the banks of the Danube. Here you
can sit and drink homemade lavender juice, served in vintage bottles
and glasses as you chat with the collector himself. From this garden
you enter the long exhibition space of the original barn.

	At
the front end of the space, a staircase leads to perpendicular volume
of the upper floor. Here, again in a large open space, working areas,
a bedroom and bathroom are situated, all appearing as part of the
exhibition. In this space, resident artists can stay, and readings,
performances etc. can take place.
On
the other side of the original building the second doorway is leading
to a courtyard that looks as though nothing around it has changed in
decades, and by and large, that is true. This
low-cost development with its reused materials has provided so much
for so little by keeping what was there already.

	DEMOCRATICALLY CRUCIFIED

german&#38;nbsp;version

Black letters pressed tightly together so that the space between them almost disappears. No pause, hardly any distance. Yet two words remain legible:
DEMOKRATISCH GEKREUZIGT

(Democratically Crucified).

&#60;img width="2600" height="1734" width_o="2600" height_o="1734" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/90da2daea444ac446b90c6b2e7dedfed57e5becd9d681ffd62a298c7f66ed3ee/02_Demokratisch-Gekreuzigt_Milan-Mijalkovic_Foto-Thomas-Kranabetter.jpg" data-mid="252646365" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/90da2daea444ac446b90c6b2e7dedfed57e5becd9d681ffd62a298c7f66ed3ee/02_Demokratisch-Gekreuzigt_Milan-Mijalkovic_Foto-Thomas-Kranabetter.jpg" /&#62;

The monumental, 15-metre-long text banner confronts the crucifixion with the secular social system of democracy. This conceptual friction disrupts established patterns of thought and creates tensions between then and now, power and powerlessness, democracy and manipulation, law and arbitrariness.

	&#60;img width="2600" height="1734" width_o="2600" height_o="1734" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/52175d323353ce1064baeafc499355933b0a4c5dbbec83fbad0c69ffe2bff237/01_Demokratisch-Gekreuzigt_Milan-Mijalkovic_Foto-Paul-Sebesta.jpg" data-mid="252646364" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/52175d323353ce1064baeafc499355933b0a4c5dbbec83fbad0c69ffe2bff237/01_Demokratisch-Gekreuzigt_Milan-Mijalkovic_Foto-Paul-Sebesta.jpg" /&#62;

In light of current crises and armed conflicts, this imposition takes on particular urgency.

It calls for daring to dissent, questioning comfortable assumptions, and demanding individual responsibility within a collective that judges, votes, and decides together—over life and death, over peace and war.&#38;nbsp;

PLEASE THANK YOU (Bitte Danke)

Black banners drape the Donaucity Church like a pulsating second skin. The façade installation harnesses the strong winds sweeping across Vienna’s Danube Plateau, setting the steel façade in motion and disrupting the “tunnel vision” of passers-by.

	What begins as a polite phrase is transformed through repetition into an appeal, a cry of protest, a prayer. Against the backdrop of the United Nations, 13 BITTE banners transformed the site into the setting for the UNPLATZ! Festival 2026.

The installation radicalises everyday politeness into an uncompromising demand.

The Democratic Cross

german version

Four hands, countless combinations. Sometimes their movements seem random, sometimes meaningful. The form — a plain cross. At each end, thumbs turn on their own axis and become signs — some from long-vanished times, others forming only in this moment.

Pollice verso — the turned thumbs of the Roman gladiator arena. The crowd decides over life and death. Golgotha — a similar scene. Again the crowd passes judgment,

this time

it ends on a cross. Today the vote is flattened into an emoji, the reflexive sign of approval or rejection: against 👎 or for 👍.

"The Democratic Cross" pulls the symbol back out of the screen — real, three-dimensional, in motion. But do these hands conceal something? Is it like a magic trick — a diversion, meant to lose the trace? A sleight of hand, meant to confuse? Where is up, where is down? What is left, what is right?

Yet most of it

disappears entirely into the black:

 motors, sensors, controllers, cables, codes. What remains visible are the gestures, the verdicts, the entertainment — the emotion, not the system.

  UNPLATZ! FESTIVAL
  12. &#124; 19. &#124; 26. JUNI 2026
  Donaucity-Kirche, Platz der Vereinten Nationen, Wien Donaustadt&#38;nbsp;
&#60;img width="1080" height="1080" width_o="1080" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d808bf278571e079229e2e2ca4bb717cc7b5ab7a1ee828ea80f04d9677fddec2/1zu1-unplatz.jpg" data-mid="248718155" border="0" data-scale="61" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d808bf278571e079229e2e2ca4bb717cc7b5ab7a1ee828ea80f04d9677fddec2/1zu1-unplatz.jpg" /&#62;

Festival?

Manches, was in
dieser Ausstellung gezeigt wird, mag irritieren. Manches mag
verstören. Vielleicht berührt es auch christliche
Empfindlichkeiten.
Alltag vielleicht lieber ausweichen.

bestätigen, was ohnehin alle hören wollen.

Ausstellung POSITION +&#38;nbsp;an.
„Only Slaves Go on Vacation“ stellen keine einfachen Antworten
bereit.

fragen müssen, was uns abstumpfen lässt, was uns manipuliert, was

will niemandem den Glauben nehmen. Sie will ihn herausfordern.

		<description>Baroque Parking Garage
	In February 2010, the Public Enterprise for Management of Residential and
Commercial Properties of the Republic of Macedonia launched an open
architectural competition for a parking garage in the city center of Skopje,
which should provide 315 parking places as well as space for offices and
retail. According to the competition brief, the garage should be designed in a
“baroque, classic, neo-classic, romantic and neo-romantic style” (sic!). This
garage is one of several parking facilities which are projected within the
frame of “Skopje 2014”, a gigantic restructuring project that was presented by
the populist conservative government in 2010. Almost twenty years after the
dissolution of Yugoslavia, this project is reinventing and reaffirmating
Macedonia´s seperable, undeniable and glorified national identity through
urbanism and architecture. Macedonian culture is celebrated by a large number
of memorials, religious symbols and new public buildings which are mostly
designed in a historicist style. Neo-baroque is the favorite one, with its
connotation of power and impact on the masses.&#38;nbsp;

	&#60;img width="1196" height="797" width_o="1196" height_o="797" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2e4cafc6be041d92ad9a5dfea12a8d5208315d479baf4c5e8c3ecb78cba60661/Barock-Garage-Skopje-004_b.png" data-mid="20018679" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2e4cafc6be041d92ad9a5dfea12a8d5208315d479baf4c5e8c3ecb78cba60661/Barock-Garage-Skopje-004_b.png" /&#62;

The extensive use of these
styles is supposed to establish Skopje as the European, Christian, bourgeois
city that it has never really been – and to deny its oriental, Islamic as well
as it socialist, modern past. All this is happening to a city that fifty years before has been declared
an “Open City”, open to a society in flux. Following the devastating earthquake
of 1963, a major international reconstruction effort under UN supervision was
seen as an opportunity to rationalize the whole structure of the city. A
totally new city center should be created, the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange
was responsible for its master plan. The increasing mobility of the society has
been one core topic of Tange´s plan, therefore he proposed a circulation system
of concentric rings and radial axes, a transport hub called “City Gate” as well
as facilities for individual parking beneath the high-density slab-block
housing of the “City Wall”, originally planned for 30.000 inhabitants. Anyhow,
the supply of parking facilities obviously didn´t match the needs of the time
and they were soon transformed into private storage space, especially used by
vendors of the nearby vegetable markets.

&#60;img width="797" height="797" width_o="797" height_o="797" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/926de6ee0709052c7988e328c1a03df943a87db4ffa6039f5dd8193ff62c7696/Barock-Garage-Skopje-010.png" data-mid="20018683" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/797/i/926de6ee0709052c7988e328c1a03df943a87db4ffa6039f5dd8193ff62c7696/Barock-Garage-Skopje-010.png" /&#62;

In recent years, the traffic
in Skopje rapidly increased and parking is organized rather wildly. The city is
willing to solve the problem by offering additional multi-storey space for
parking. In the 2010 competition for the garage, Milan Mijalkovic in
cooperation with PPAG architects, Vienna handed in a project that subtly
comments on today´s context of “Skopje 2014”. The project could not win the
competition but it was purchased by the Public Enterprise and given to the city
of Skopje (reportedly, through a personal intervention of the prime minister
who was fond of the project´s façade). It was decided that the façade should be
realized within another garage project that was already in the stage of
planning and designed by two professors of the local faculty of architecture.
There are several professors of the faculty who are – directly or indirectly –
involved in the projects of “Skopje 2014” – a fact that might explain their
rather cautious critique on the city´s antiquization. The proposed façade
interprets the wish for a historicist appearance without explicitly using the
traditional language of historicism. It adapts the baroque idea of creating
reality by the means of illusive perspective.&#38;nbsp;

	&#60;img width="1200" height="240" width_o="1200" height_o="240" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e13ca6bc8b7d0566012dbf1592e11893033ee04c1c5604ce18ec0bff813d42a8/Barock-Garage-Skopje-012.png" data-mid="20018685" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e13ca6bc8b7d0566012dbf1592e11893033ee04c1c5604ce18ec0bff813d42a8/Barock-Garage-Skopje-012.png" /&#62;

Baroque artworks expand into the
real space as well as vice versa the reality merges into the illusive
perspective of the artwork. The starting point for the design of the façade is
an amateur´s photograph showing a perspective view of historicist residential
houses in Vienna. These distorted façades are multiplied and assembled to a surface
of an unclear vanishing point. The surface is dissolved into four layers of
tailored, shadow throwing composite panels on a steel construction.
Transforming the familiar appearance of historicist residential houses into a
strange cover of a “baroque garage” makes this new object uncanny,
“unheimlich”. Although the reference is not very obvious, the beholder senses
this uncanny, dreamlike – or nightmare like. This disturbing presence of the
“baroque garage” subtly reflects the disturbing situation of “Skopje 2014”.

Further information on the City of Skopje are summarized in our book "Skopje. The World's Bastard - Architecture of
the Divided City"

ŽIVELI TEHNOKLASTI

german version

The idea emerged at the end of 2024 from a feeling that something was missing amid technological progress — a strong opposition, a radical counterforce. I first mentioned it publicly in the interview

Great Need for Great Dispute

 in January 2025, where I coined the term “Technoclasts”, drawing on the tradition of the

iconoclasts.

	&#60;img width="1131" height="1600" width_o="1131" height_o="1600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/208593dae3adf0b4ac698da7013603462cb9129c8aac034ac3d37e389db7ac6c/001_A_HOCH-LEBEN-DIE-TECHNOKLASTEN.jpg" data-mid="251759322" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/208593dae3adf0b4ac698da7013603462cb9129c8aac034ac3d37e389db7ac6c/001_A_HOCH-LEBEN-DIE-TECHNOKLASTEN.jpg" /&#62;
	&#60;img width="1131" height="1600" width_o="1131" height_o="1600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/680b042f6e1e82513a6392e6dc59345add0cebb5e03ed9d55eb8d39d432f8709/ZIVELI-TEHNOKLASTI.jpg" data-mid="251758172" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/680b042f6e1e82513a6392e6dc59345add0cebb5e03ed9d55eb8d39d432f8709/ZIVELI-TEHNOKLASTI.jpg" /&#62;
	&#60;img width="1131" height="1600" width_o="1131" height_o="1600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/564718a1f3c3ea2579ccefb906824b2fa934d298263f68b7a3ba89bac1bdc299/001_A_LONG-LIVE-THE-TECHNOCLASTS.jpg" data-mid="251758325" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/564718a1f3c3ea2579ccefb906824b2fa934d298263f68b7a3ba89bac1bdc299/001_A_LONG-LIVE-THE-TECHNOCLASTS.jpg" /&#62;

A first visual expression of the idea followed in the form of a poster, conceived as an invocation for this force to emerge. It was shown at Donau-City Church, Vienna, in June 2026, as part of

POSITION +, a group exhibition I organized in cooperation with the art gallery gezwanzig.&#38;nbsp;It was hung on the inside of the church’s entrance door — visible on the way out.

	&#60;img width="1920" height="1514" width_o="1920" height_o="1514" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a574e08236c2997197ed0eee364bdd4e11b2a6788dd7af8ba0193d956f804f7c/Technoclasts-Postion-_3.jpg" data-mid="251734743" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a574e08236c2997197ed0eee364bdd4e11b2a6788dd7af8ba0193d956f804f7c/Technoclasts-Postion-_3.jpg" /&#62;

The poster appears in three languages and shows raised champagne glasses — a gesture of agreement, a symbolic pact:
Technoclasts are emerging.

Živeli Tehnoklasti!Hoch leben die Technoklasten!Long Live the Technoclasts!

HALTAR

	&#60;img width="1067" height="1600" width_o="1067" height_o="1600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4a57890b23b8445438f50688e87b089b5465dc9a4155d9c8cf0b44afaa92dc31/_A9A9614_a_highres__Paul_Sebestag.jpg" data-mid="251548220" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4a57890b23b8445438f50688e87b089b5465dc9a4155d9c8cf0b44afaa92dc31/_A9A9614_a_highres__Paul_Sebestag.jpg" /&#62;

Nine identical strips of yew, cut on the same day. Three meet first, taking a triangle's form.

Six fan out, three from each base point, equally spaced along the sides. The nine strips now fuse sunrise and sunset into a single sign.

 An up, a down, no left, no right.

Three gilded screws, one at each corner, holding a whole greater than the sum of its parts — now it is HALTAR.

	&#60;img width="1754" height="430" width_o="1754" height_o="430" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6e2126dcb171be82a0de9608cc51bd68969041506eca5ea7ac0c71736e1a88ec/HALTARplan-2.png" data-mid="251526025" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6e2126dcb171be82a0de9608cc51bd68969041506eca5ea7ac0c71736e1a88ec/HALTARplan-2.png" /&#62;

Hold it with both hands by its outer ends, behind the head. In that moment, the ordinary breaks. The elbows spread. The chest opens. The spine finds its full length.

	&#60;img width="1067" height="1600" width_o="1067" height_o="1600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1a781c1d577743bf3e197cb9c5bbb0d39dc4e4903425c086e25828b4053313f8/_A9A9603_highres__Paul_Sebesta.jpg" data-mid="251548218" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1a781c1d577743bf3e197cb9c5bbb0d39dc4e4903425c086e25828b4053313f8/_A9A9603_highres__Paul_Sebesta.jpg" /&#62;

The HALTAR changes the way a person stands in the world. It centers and elevates. It gives presence a form, and weight to one’s stance.

 The HALTAR does not represent—HALTAR produces position.
