REOPENING SPEECH

What a privilege to be able to speak here before you. Ah, how important this is... I will be brief today. I certainly won't say everything today, but please don't be too harsh with me. Today, I am the master of ceremonies with a pointy hat... But hopefully tomorrow, that will be you! Or you? Or you?
The grand reopening of the square. Here in Donaustadt, here in Vienna. Here we stand, we've made it! And with that, it’s actually finished—the beginning. EVERYTHING is set. One hears drums—the vessels. Suddenly a speech… A song… The flags… the people, the sun, the night… We are doing this together. And yes, I do believe that this is a great deed. The United Nations Square is being reopened after almost exactly 22 years. Because now is the time. The world situation at the moment is not comprehensible... And that's exactly why this square was planned here back then—so that, if necessary, we can stand here together and speak together before the UN.
But does it have to be today? It’s mid-December and it's cold. Does democracy only work seasonally? It’s windy and everything is freezing... But some are still here with us and haven't fallen into winter sleep. We are here today, reopening this square and many more will awaken, because it cannot be that the public sphere depends on the weather and the season. We need the public sphere now, it is important now—because global, societal questions, or the questions of a city, cannot be solved only within institutions, only in offices, only at one's own table, only in the municipality… And not just by one party or the other. And I also don't believe that democratic governance is solely done by elected representatives in parliament...
We need the public sphere now, it is important now, because the world neither stands still nor is calm. At the moment it is escalating. There is stupidity, fear, lack of ideas, brutality, there is war... The whole thing makes no sense. The world is not comprehensible… Instead of educational institutions, we have arms deliveries and arms production, instead of negotiations, violence and confrontation, and instead of equal opportunities… death and child murder… Are you for it or are you against it? Say yes or no. Say, what does your emotion tell you? Do we urgently need a resolution?
I wonder, are we here in this world to destroy? Are we here to kill? Or is it for life and peace? We need the public sphere now, because the public sphere is what forms and supports an egalitarian society. We need the public sphere now, because it is important for us, but it is also important for the world.
When and where else should we talk to each other? To understand the whole... When and where should we finally exchange publicly, discuss openly together? Where should we forge plans together?
Where should we normally discuss this incomprehensible situation in which we live today? Where should we organize ourselves? And when and where should we realize miracles together? We need new rules for public places, for un-places, to bring them to life. We need the public sphere and it must arise publicly. And when I say publicly, I don't mean in the digital world. Publicly—it's not virtual, it’s public as soon as a real counterpart stands next to you. We need the public sphere now, but it does not arise by talking to machines, but by confronting equals and free people under the open sky.
But what were our positions and above all what were our goals? Instead of setting common goals and recognizing them, today one recognizes… What? Consuming… consuming, consuming. Without reacting, without concentrating, without benefiting, in the end discrediting oneself. I must remind: It is democratic to criticize… otherwise stupidity will win or false intelligence. Instead of recognizing common goals, one recognizes McDonald’s today. But what are the 17 goals of the UN? And who can list them? And which goal would you choose?
Art? Do I need to mention… It is almost no longer visible here… and is neglected, censored, or even removed by the UN. Today we clearly say, we do not agree with this. We do not consent to this... The UN is not doing well... But it should be a world-improving organization… And at the moment? UN employees and their families are being killed… In the last few weeks, the flags behind me in the courtyard were flown at half-mast hundreds of times. I say today on this square: The pointy hat is not a war helmet! And we gladly help you. We gladly help… Because solidarity is not just singing loudly and clapping hands, but howling along. Together… Crying over the fate and course of the world. Enduring with patience… Solidarity is shared responsibility. A fair distribution of… guilt.
But what about the privileged? What about the right of veto? If we want to make decisions here on this square, it must be regulated—fair. And that also does not mean that the majority then decides alone. Of course not… Rather, it means—each member has a right of veto. Because it is not the majority decision that is valuable… Rather, the solution is what counts.
How could you help? Look. Look closely. Just look… don’t look away. Look longer, look around, look beyond your borders… much is without common sense! Much is unfair! Look, many are for weapons and war… Look at misery… But look… Wealth… Look, and show others please, there is enough of everything, we just have to plan and distribute… Look at infinite possibilities, look in front of you and look into the distance, look there are alternatives… Look, much needs to be reopened, renovated and reactivated, but also protected, look, so many things need to be repaired… and some things are still ahead of us… to do and to make… We are here today, because freedom and peace cannot be postponed.

Was für ein Privileg, hier vor euch sprechen zu dürfen. Ah, ist das wichtig… Ich werde heute kurz sein. Ich werde heute sicherlich nicht alles sagen, aber bitte seid mit mir nicht zu streng. Ich bin heute der Zeremonienmeister mit Spitzhut… Aber morgen hoffentlich bist das Du! Oder Du? Oder Du?
Platz-Neueröffnung. Hier in Donaustadt, hier in Wien. Hier stehen wir, wir haben es geschafft! Und damit ist es eigentlich fertig - der Beginn. ALLES steht. Man hört Trommeln - die Gefäße. Auf einmal eine Rede… Ein Gesang… Die Fahnen… die Leute, die Sonne, die Nacht… Wir machen das gemeinsam. Und ja, ich glaube schon, dass das hier eine große Tat ist. Der Platz der Vereinten Nationen wird nach ziemlich genau 22 Jahren wieder eröffnet. Weil jetzt die Zeit ist. Die Weltsituation ist im Moment nicht zu verstehen… Und genau deswegen wurde dieser Platz damals hier geplant - sodass, wenn nötig, wir hier gemeinsam stehen und gemeinsam sprechen vor der UN.
Aber muss es heute sein? Es ist Mitte Dezember und es ist kalt. Funktioniert die Demokratie etwa nur saisonal? Es ist windig und alles friert… Aber einige sind trotzdem mit uns hier und sind nicht gefallen - in den Winterschlaf. Wir sind heute hier und eröffnen diesen Platz neu und noch mehrere werden erwachen, denn es darf nicht sein, dass die Öffentlichkeit von der Wetterlage und der Jahreszeit abhängt. Jetzt benötigen wir Öffentlichkeit, jetzt ist es wichtig - weil globale, gesellschaftliche Fragen, oder die Fragen einer Stadt nicht zu lösen sind, nur in der Institution, nur im Büro, nur am eigenen Tisch, nur im Magistrat… Und auch nicht nur in der einen oder nur in der anderen Partei. Und ich glaube auch nicht, dass demokratisch zu regieren ist, alleine von gewählten Repräsentant:innen im Parlament…
Jetzt benötigen wir Öffentlichkeit, jetzt ist es wichtig, weil die Welt weder still noch ruhig steht. Im Moment eskaliert es. Es herrscht Dummheit, Angst, Ideenlosigkeit, Brutalität, es herrscht Krieg… Das Ganze macht gar keinen Sinn. Die Welt ist nicht zu verstehen… Statt Bildungsstätten haben wir Waffenlieferungen und Waffenproduktion, statt Verhandlungen Gewalt und Konfrontation, und statt Chancengleichheit…Tod und Kindermord… Bist du dafür oder bist du dagegen? Sage Ja oder Nein. Sag, was sagt deine Emotion? Benötigen wir dringend eine Resolution?
Ich frage mich, sind wir hier auf dieser Welt, um zu zerstören? Sind wir hier, um zu töten? Oder warats doch wegen des Lebens und des Friedens? Wir benötigen die Öffentlichkeit jetzt, weil die Öffentlichkeit das ist, was eine egalitäre Gesellschaft bildet und trägt. Wir benötigen die Öffentlichkeit jetzt, weil das wichtig für uns ist, aber es ist auch wichtig für die Welt.
Wann und wo sollen wir denn sonst miteinander reden? Um das Ganze zu verstehen… Wann und wo sollen wir uns endlich öffentlich austauschen, gemeinsam offen diskutieren? Wo sollen wir gemeinsam Pläne schmieden?
Wo sollen wir denn diese unverständliche Situation, in der wir heute leben, normal besprechen? Wo sollen wir uns organisieren? Und wann und wo sollen wir denn gemeinsam Wunder realisieren? Wir benötigen neue Regeln für die öffentlichen Plätze, für die Unplätze, um diese zum Leben zu erwecken. Wir brauchen Öffentlichkeit und diese muss öffentlich entstehen. Und wenn ich öffentlich sage, dann meine ich nicht, in der digitalen Welt. Öffentlich - Das ist doch nicht virtuell, öffentlich ist es, sobald ein reales Gegenüber neben dir steht. Wir benötigen die Öffentlichkeit jetzt, aber diese entsteht nicht beim Mitreden mit Maschinen, sondern durch Konfrontieren mit gleichen und freien Menschen unter freiem Himmel.
Aber was waren unsere Positionen und vor allem was waren unsere Ziele? Anstatt dass wir gemeinsame Ziele festlegen und diese erkennen, erkennt man heute… Was? Konsumieren… konsumieren, konsumieren. Ohne zu reagieren, ohne sich zu konzentrieren, ohne zu profitieren, um schlussendlich sich selbst zu dis·kre·di·tie·ren. Ich muss erinnern: Demokratisch ist es zu kritisieren… sonst wird die Dummheit gewinnen oder die falsche Intelligenz. Statt gemeinsame Ziele zu erkennen, erkennt man heute McDonald’s. Aber was sind die 17 Ziele der UN? Und wer kann diese aufzählen? Und welches Ziel möchtest du wählen?
Die Kunst? Muss ich erwähnen… Diese ist hier fast nicht mehr zu sehen… und wird von der UN vernachlässigt, zensuriert oder sogar ganz entfernt. Heute sagen wir klar, damit sind wir nicht einverstanden. Wir sind damit nicht im Konsent… Der UN geht es nicht gut... Aber es sollte eine weltverbessernde Organisation sein… Und im Moment? UN-Mitarbeiter*innen und ihre Familien werden umgebracht… In den letzten Wochen wurden die Fahnen hinter mir im Hof hunderte Male auf halbmast gestellt. Ich sage heute auf diesem Platz: Der Spitzhut ist kein Kriegs-Helm! Und wir helfen euch gern. Wir helfen gern… Weil Solidarität nicht nur laut singen und klatschen mit den Händen ist, sondern mitheulen. Gemeinsam… Mitweinen über das Schicksal und den Lauf der Welt. Aushalten mit Geduld… Solidarität ist Mithaftung. Eine gerechte Aufteilung der… Schuld.
Aber was ist mit den Privilegierten? Was ist mit dem Vetorecht? Wenn wir hier auf diesem Platz Entscheidungen treffen wollen, dann muss es geregelt sein - gerecht. Und das bedeutet aber auch nicht, dass die Mehrheit dann allein entscheidet. Na sicher nicht… Sondern, es bedeutet - jedes Mitglied hat ein Vetorecht. Da nicht die Mehrheitsentscheidung wertvoll ist… Sondern Solution… die Lösung ist, was zählt.
Wie du helfen könntest? Schau hin. Schau genau hin. Schau einfach… nicht weg. Schau länger, schau rundherum, schau über deine Grenzen… viel ist ohne common sense! Viel ist ungerecht! Schau, viele sind für Waffen und Krieg… Schau Elend… Aber schau… Reichtum… Schau, und Anderen bitte zeigen, von allem ist genügend vorhanden, wir müssen nur planen und verteilen… Schau unendliche Möglichkeiten, schau vor dir und schau in die Weite, schau es gibt Alternativen… Schau vieles ist neuzueröffnen, zu renovieren und wieder zu aktivieren, aber auch zu beschützen, schau zu sanieren sind so viele Dinge… und einiges steht noch vor uns… zu tun und zu machen… Wir sind heute hier, weil Freiheit und Frieden darf man nicht verschieben.
