The Monument of the Working Man
“The
Monument of the Working Man” was supposed to be something else. It
started out with the design of a fully-automatic machine which blows
up and throws out balloons. The balloons were supposed to be
transported by a round-magazine mechanism of an old slide projector
and inflated by an air compressor. During one of Mijalkovic´s visits
to the hardware store the idea got a shift: he decided to ‘install’
one of the workmen offering illicit labor in front of the store,
rather than using the technology from inside the store.
A
Romanian bricklayer agreed to do it, as he had never done such a
“balloon job” and demanded 1 Euro per balloon. It was decided
that the balloons would be red and that they would lose air as soon
as they take off from the man-machine.
